Lot Details

At 56 inches high, Will Ryman’s mixed media floral arrangement sculpture, ‘Untitled, Rose 8,’ is one of the smaller works from the artist’s acclaimed installation ‘The Roses’, which was on view in the winter/spring of 2011 along New York City’s Park Avenue. The series, which consists of red and pink rose sculptures ranging from 3 to 25 feet high, is Ryman’s homage to the dynamism and larger than life quality of his native city. Constructed from materials meant to withstand the elements, Ryman’s roses, complete with a ladybug and beetle, represent the cycle of nature and provide spring blossoms year-round.

The work stands on custom base, commissioned by the current owners.

Originally a playwright and author, Will Ryman’s (born 1969, New York) sculptural works often depict large-scale, theatrical scenes infused with drama, emotion, and action. Primarily using papier-mâché to produce detailed, exaggerated figures, Ryman’s casts his expressive figures in a variety of juxtapositions, incorporating art historical and spiritual references to transform the site in which they are installed into a stage for the narrative to unfold. Ryman studied in New York City at The McBurney School and The New School in the late 1980s. His first foray into sculpture was in 2001 and his first solo show was in 2004 at the Sculpture Center, Long Island City, NY. Recently, his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York, NY (2012); The Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2010); Marlborough Gallery, New York, NY (2009); and Galerie Bernd Klüser, Munich, Germany (2006). His ‘The Roses’ installation was on view in 2011 in New York City in conjunction with Paul Kasmin Gallery.
