Lot Details

"Abstract no. 17" (1993) is a dynamic abstract oil painting by famed Chinese Contemporary painter Wang Yigang (China, b. 1961) and comes to the sale from a top private collection, China. References to Western Abstract Expressionist like Franz Klein and William de Kooning are evidenced by the gestural variations of color and brush work, integrating graffiti like repeated characters with emphasis on pattern and conscious stream of thought. As an innovator of Chinese abstract expressionism, Wang Yigang enhances Western methods of painting with traditional Eastern inspired gestures, mark-making and the calligraphic techniques of his predecessors. This painting is in excellent condition, and measures 45.67 x 35.64 inches (116 x 90.5 cm). This work is custom framed to slightly larger dimensions.

Wang Yigang was born in Qiqiha'er City, Heilongjiang Province, China and graduated from Luxan Academy of Fine Arts in 1986. Wang has won several awards beginning in 1985 with the National Art Exhibition of the Young Artists, a bronze award in 1991 the National art Exhibition for the Founding of the 70th Anniversary, in 1992 the China-Guangzhou Biennial, and in 1993 the China Oil Painting Biennial. The artist has exhibited extensively through the US, Europe and China at various art fairs, festivals, biennials, and galleries including the Red Gate Gallery in China, the International Art Biennial in California, US, and and the "Chinese Contemporary Social Art Exhibition" at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia, among many others.
