Lot Details

One of the most famous Chinese Contemporary artists of his generation, Wang Ningde's large-scale black and white photographs are mesmerizing fantasy-scapes. "Some Days No. 33" is one of the most sublime and poignant images from artist's iconic "Some Days" series that each capture Wang's trademark figurative narratives in unique manners, typically with figures poised in the midst of some sort of movement. In "Some Days No. 33" a man rows away from view with his back to us, looking away from the audience while a woman wearing a white dress is curled up at the back of the boat, as if asleep. This surreal moment renders the boat and its occupants as immobile, frozen in time atop the mirror-glass surface of the water. The audience looks down on this fantastic narrative from a voyeuristic birds-eye perspective that crops out the horizon-line. This perspective heightens the sense of that one is viewing this moment as if a film still, one suspended between reality, memory, and imagination. This is edition 1 of 10, measures 48 1/2 x 61 3/4 inches as unframed and is in perfect condition.

Wang Ningde was born in Liaoning Province in 1972, China and graduated in 1995 from Luxin Art Institute. He has shown in major international museums like the Asia Society Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Seattle Art Museum in Washington, Kunstmuseum Bern in Switzerland, the 2005 Lianzhou International Photographic Exhibition in China, the 2004 Shanghai Biennale and many more. The artist currently lives and works in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, China.
