Wang Guangyi (1956), is a Chinese artist known for being the leader of the New Art Movement circles that erupted out of China after 1989. His aesthetic entails combining propaganda images and photographs from Communist China - and fusing them with Western commercial brands and logos. His most acclaimed series of paintings and prints, belong to his 'Great Criticism' series of paintings and prints, that have earned him international fame and a world-wide collectors base. On a surface level, his work intentionally imitates Andy Warhol's Pop Art works, but their content is a more complex commentary on socialism and consumerism. Wang Guangyi is one of the most important 'Political Neo-Pop' artists and a founder of the Avant-Garde movement in China.
