Lot Details

This large, beautifully rendered drawing of a horse with watercolor pen was created on the title page of the First Edition of Walasse Ting's magnificent hardcover monograph Rice Paper Painting published by Yves Riviere in Paris. The drawing is hand signed and dated and uniquely dedicated to a friend. The lavishly illustrated monograph itself is a collectors' item, as it was published in a limited edition of only 3000 hard cover copies.

Chinese-born American painter Walasse Ting (1929-2010) was known for his playful images of the natural world—with recurrent sensual subject matter including insects, birds, horses and women—executed with calligraphic brushwork and vibrant palette.

Ting has had more than 70 solo exhibitions in major art galleries and museums around the world. He is perhaps best known for his longtime collaboration with abstract expressionist painter Sam Francis which resulted in the legendary Sixties portfolio One Cent Life, an international collection of lithographs by Pop and Abstract Artists Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Indiana, Mel Ramos, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Joan Mitchell, and others, as well as works by COBRA artists Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, and many others.
