Lot Details

This work was created between 1986-1987.

This striking work typifies the vibrant colors and favored motifs of internationally renowned contemporary artist Walasse Ting. The two parrots, in lively contrast to the bright blue background, are examples of Ting’s most iconic subject matter. With broad areas of color and expressionistic lines created with a Chinese calligraphy brush, “Perroquets sur Fond Bleu” reflects both art historical influences and his personal background.

Walasse Ting (1929 - 2010) is a Chinese-American visual artist and poet who was known for his fresh, vibrant, and highly colorful paintings. Born in Shanghai, he lived for a short period in Paris before moving to New York in 1957. His work was influenced by Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, and he used a distinct Chinese calligraphy brushstroke in order to create figures within his work. Images of insects, women, birds, and flowers are often themes for his art and elude to Ting’s love of sensory pleasure in the natural world. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for Drawing in 1970. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including the National Museum, Taipei, China; National Gallery of Art, Reykjavik, Iceland; Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, PA; Scheringa Museum, Spanbroek, Netherlands; Lefebre Gallery, New York, NY; and Galerie La Hune, Paris, France, among others.
