Lot Details

“Apsarokes & Barcelona Armchair by Ludwig Van der Rohe, 1929-2848", (from the Bauhaus series)” (2006) is a perfect example of the fantasy-like narratives for which famous Contemporary French artist, Virginie Barré is critically acclaimed. Here, she conflates animate and inanimate objects that are totally disconnected to one another and creates a truly exciting, surreal narrative. Barré's works are renowned for her displays of shifts in power and the loss of the rich cultural heritage of past societies through pop culture imagery. This work is an homage to the merging of spiritual reflections of both aesthetics of the past and Modern present. This gouache and marker painting on paper measures 40 inches x 28 7/8 inches (101.6 x 75.90 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Virginie Barré was born in Quimper Bretagne, France in 1970 and received degrees from Camberwell School of Art, London and Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. The artist has been included in several important solo and group exhibitions including the Notre Histoire, the Lyon Biennial, the Musee d’art modern de la Ville de Paris, The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux and the Prague Biennial in 2003. Her works are highly sought-after on the primary and secondary markets.
