Desert is an impressive example of Celmins micro-detailed drawing process into print. "Untitled (Desert)" can be found in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA), LA, CA, the Cirrus Editions Archive and the Tate, London, to name a few. The Tate Modern recently exhibited this print in their Artist Rooms: Vija Celmins.

During the late 1960s - 1970s the artist focused on drawing over painting as a favored medium. In this print the artist draws the true substance of the landscape, detailing rocks in a minimalist inspired composition. The printing process furthers the expression of the artist, her drawing made directly onto lithographic stone for one of the two runs that make the image. This print is one from a portfolio of four lithographs inspired by her drawings of compositions of a sky, galaxy, ocean and desert landscapes. Printed on handmade Twinrocker rag paper, this print is in excellent condition.

Vija Celmins (B. 1938, Riga, Latvia) is a contemporary printmaker, painter, and sculptor known for her contemplative works inspired by views of the sea, desert, and star constellations. Celmins has a highly attuned sense of detail with her work, creating elegant renderings of spider webs, galaxies, and natural landscapes and working for months on a single image. Celmins has received numerous awards over the course of her career including the Coutts Contemporary Art Foundation Award (2000-2001), the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Art (1996), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1980), among others. Numerous retrospectives have been held for Celmins at institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN), and Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, CA)
