Lot Details

Vija Celmins' "Concentric Bearings" series of prints is an important body of work created by the artist in collaboration with publisher Gemini G. E. L. in Los Angeles. The focus of this body of work is "turning space." In this particular print Celmins has combined three images that convey varying speeds and types of movement. On the left is a found image of an airplane in mid-flight, capturing a second of time as the plane zips overhead. In the center is one of Celmin's classic images of a starry sky. On the right is Celmin's depiction of a work by Marcel Duchamp, drawn by artist and transferred into photogravure plate. "Rotary Glass Plates (Precision Optics) 1920," was a machine built by Duchamp to create optical illusions. As the glass plates spin at a high velocity, they create a solid image of a circle, essentially movement creating a stationary image.
