Robert Stanley (American, 1932-1997) was an early Pop artist who first worked in collage, and the brother in-law of Roy Lichtenstein. His paintings in the 1960s were based on images taken from newspapers and magazines. He often used a two color palette to define and contrast his compositions. In this vivid print of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall - Stanley elegantly reproduces a scene from one of their films together- catching an intimate cigarette lighting moment.

Allen Jones (British, 1937) a Pop artist who was expelled from the Royal College of Art in 1960, but not before he met fellow artists: Peter Phillips, David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj. In the mid 1960s, he travelled with Phillips to the United States where he was introduced to Stephen Poleskie and made this ‘Polka’ print at Chiron Press. The print shows a slinky female torso in dotted bathing suit, which also sports a black snake slithering up her middle - its forked tongue becoming the defining lines of her cleavage. Another proof of this edition sold at a Phillips de Pury- London- auction in 2010, curated around ‘sex’ as a guiding theme.
