Lot Details

"Untitled (Blue)" (1998) by famous African artist Malangatana Valente-Ngwenya is a museum-level work, displaying a very rare, expressive and emotional use of the color blue, the only painting that the artist is known to have created in this hue. In turn, this work also stands as one of the very finest examples of artist’s iconic, exaggerated figurative style. Dimensions: 47.6 x 57.87 inches (121 x 147 cm), in excellent condition and can ship on or off of stretchers. Malangatana's works are held in the permanent collection of the National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC. In addition to his paintings, murals, sculptures and ceramics, he has also left his mark on Mozambican cultural life by playing a founding role in the establishment of the Museu Nacional de Arte and the Nùcleo de Arte and setting up the Centro Cultural de Matalana. Ngwenya was awarded the Nachingwea Medal for his Contribution to Mozambican Culture and in 1997 named a UNESCO Artist for Peace and received a Prince Claus Award.
