This stunning work depicts a young Indian Man wearing an oxygen mask--a surreal image that is typical of the realist watercolor series by renowned Contemporary Indian artist T.V Santhosh. It is an important example from his ongoing series of monochromatic watercolor works on paper that feature a central image, a mini-narrative- amongst the pools of dark watercolor, as if we are viewing an apparition or dream. The superficial beauty and the unique combination of imagery here creates a powerful works which explores historical injustices, acts of violence, and the manipulation of media propaganda. This work carries its own unique narrative, as this young man seems unbothered by the oxygen mask he wears over nose and mouth as he gazes off calmly as if deep in thought. Speaking to global pollution and well as the living conditions of the poor in India and third world countries, here Santhosh depicts a world where one literally needs their own oxygen supply to breathe.

Appropriating references from news sources such as television, newspapers, and magazines, Santhosh surrounds viewers with the immediacy of his work, and is internationally known for his oil paintings with his famous solarizing his palette to create stunning visual effects within his compositions as well as his ongoing series of smaller, watercolor works on paper. His painterly style is incredible and allows his subverted techniques to create deeper psychological narratives within the margins of his work. Santhosh is one of the most famous Contemporary Indian artists working today with his paintings and watercolors in top Museum and Private Collections. In turn, he has held solo exhibitions at such venues as The Singapore Art Museum (Singapore), The Saatchi Gallery (London, UK), among others.
