Lot Details

"Sleepless Night" (2007) is a major oil painting in both scale and composition by Contemporary Chinese artist Tu Hongtao, whose paintings are internationally acclaimed for the manner in which the artist integrates reality with fantasy. Set in one of his iconic stage-like interiors, the visual focus is on a beautiful young woman, wide-awake, propped against her bed, unable to sleep, hence the title of the painting. Her hyper-sexualized and superficial figure possess gravitas and psychological tension, enhanced by the vacant stare of the doll, and is is countered by the commonplace and very ordinary room she inhabits. Another other nymph-like figure is included and both seem unaware of each others presence. "Sleepless Night" is a provocative dream-scape, painted in a naturalistic manor, where reality and fantasy co-exist and is one of the most successful and exciting paintings by the artist to-date. This work measures 59 x82.7 inches (150 x 210 cm), is unframed and in pristine condition.

Tu Hongtao (B. 1976 China) is one of China's most important young Contemporary artists. Similar to earlier great contemporary Sichuan artists, Tu's work is based on the literal and emotional situation of the individual, focusing on the psyche that lies beneath a superficial surface. His work is influenced by Surrealist artists including Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. The artist has been in exhibited world-wide at such venues as the Iberia Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing, China), Today Art Museum (Beijing, China), Museum of Contemporary Art (Shanghai, China), and Suzhou Museum (Suzhou, China), among others. He graduated from China Academy of Fine Arts (1999), specializing in oil painting and was the recipient of the Taiwan Lizhongsheng Foundation Excellence Award (1998). The artist currently lives and works in both Chengdu and Beijing, China.
