"Night Girl" (2008) is a dynamic painting on paper by Contemporary Chinese artist Tu Hongtao, whose acrylic and oil paintings are internationally acclaimed for the manner in which the artist integrates reality with fantasy. This is one of his most visually dynamic and thematically seductive paintings on paper to date. A beautiful young woman is the visual focus of the composition, laying in bed with her long dark hair tousled, her face heavily made and has what appears to be a snake-like tattoo on her upper arm. "Night Girl" is an exciting example of the hyper-sexualized women that fill Tu's oeuvre. His painting manner on paper is very loose and gestural, here pools of paint are quickly applied, making this image feel like a hazy dream or memory, thus heightening the sexual and psychological feeling of the work.

Tu Hongtao (B. 1976 China) is one of China's most important young Contemporary artists. Similar to earlier great contemporary Sichuan artists, Tu's work is based on the literal and emotional situation of the individual, focusing on the psyche that lies beneath a superficial surface. His work is influenced by Surrealist artists including Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. The artist has been in exhibited world-wide at such venues as the Iberia Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing, China), Today Art Museum (Beijing, China), Museum of Contemporary Art (Shanghai, China), and Suzhou Museum (Suzhou, China), among others. He graduated from China Academy of Fine Arts (1999), specializing in oil painting and was the recipient of the Taiwan Lizhongsheng Foundation Excellence Award (1998). The artist lives and works in both Chengdu and Beijing, China.
