Lot Details

"Still Life with Flowers" (2006) is a stunning example of the dynamic and unabashedly celebratory still-life paintings by one of the most respected South-East Asian painters working today, Modern artist Tran Luu Hau (Vietnam, b. 1928). Painting and exhibiting world-wide for decades, Tran's modern French manner of painting, is in part influenced by artists such as Manet, and Soutine, yet he has created his own specific style of painting with his bold palette and cropped, saturated compositions. He has greatly influenced the direction of post-Modern and Contemporary art and artists in Vietnam. This painting belongs to the artist's ongoing and lively series of floral still lives that are sought after on both the primary and secondary markets. This work measures 35.4 x 31.5 inches (89.9 x 80 cm), archivally framed to 47 x 39 inches (119.4 x 99.1 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Tran Luu Hau was born in Ninh Binh, Vietnam and studied at Surikov Fine Arts Institute in Moscow, Russia and taught for over twenty years at the famous Hanoi University of Fine Arts. The artist participated in the Vietminh movement and produced illustrated stories and posters for propaganda in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. He won the second prize at the national fine arts exhibition in 1980 and the first prize at the graphic exhibition for the 1975-1985 period. Hau exhibited in the show that celebrated the liberation of the Capital Hanoi in 1955 and has had numerous solo exhibitions internationally in Paris, France, Hong Kong, and New York in major galleries and institutions. His works have been included in the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam, The Moscow Museum of Oriental Arts, The National Museum of East Asia Arts in Poland. The artist currently lives and works in Hanoi, Vietnam.
