This 2012 work by Toxic is a unique variant within an edition of six laser-cut, spray-painted aluminum wall pieces. Featuring a gradient ranging from sea foam green to teal to sapphire blue, the present work displays the bold, energetic lines and abstract quality that distinguish Toxic's innovative graffiti style.

Toxic (b. Torrick Ablack, 1965, Bronx, NY) is an American graffiti artist best known for his involvement in the New York-based street art movement of the 1980s. During that time, he pioneered a distinctly abstract style of street art alongside contemporaries such as A-One, Crash, Rammellzee, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His friendship with Rammellzee and Basquiat is commemorated in the latter’s 1983 painting “Hollywood Africans,” a group portrait of the three friends whose title refers to historically prejudicial portrayals of black Americans in film, as well as to the artists’ time together in Los Angeles. The painting is now held by the Whitney Museum of American Art. Toxic has exhibited at Sidney Janis Gallery, New York, NY (1983, 1985); Le Grand Palais, Paris, France (2009); and the Fondation Cartier, Paris, France (2009), among numerous others. He was represented by Sidney Janis before the gallerist’s death in 1989. Toxic’s work is held in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum, New York, NY.
