Lot Details

These iconic original classic Wesselmann lithographs were published on two separate sheets which join together, and are from famous "1 Cent Life" book/portfolio, published in 1964 by E. W. Kornfeld, in a limited edition of 2000. The lithography was executed by Maurice Beaudet, of Paris.

Both lithographs were published in the legendary unbound artist book titled, "1 Cent Life", which contains 62 works by 28 artists. Each is printed on two separate pages. This famed portfolio was produced and assembled by Chinese-American-European artist Walasse Ting in conjunction with American artist Sam Francis, Swiss publisher E.W. Kornfeld, and French printer Maurice Beaudet - a truly global endeavor. The portfolio, featuring some of the most recognizable lithographs of the era, was the result of an unprecedented, ambitious international collaboration between American Pop Artists of the Sixties like Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselmann, Robert Indiana, Mel Ramos and Robert Rauschenberg, and the European COBRA artists including Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, and Pierre Alechinsky, along with many others. Today, 1 Cent Life is considered one of the best artist's books ever created- coming out of one of the most influential decades in modern art.

Note that there has, over the decades, been a proliferation of later offset copies of lithographs from the "1 Cent Life" portfolio that are often sold online and even at auction houses. As these Wesselmans are some of the most recognizable images, they are also someof the most copied. However, these two litographs are 100% authentic original works directly from Portfolio No. 698 from the limited edition of 2000 - and this is the very first time in 47 years that these Wesselmans have been separated from it.

These famous prints spanning two half pages each are featured in numerous raisonnes on artist's books and catalogues that feature "1 Cent Life". They are in MINT condition and unconditionally guaranteed authentic.

They come with a copy of the numbered colophon page as provenance.
