Lot Details

This bright screenprint comes from the portfolio "11 Pop Artists, Vol. III," published in 1965. The portfolio also included work from Allan D’Arcangelo, Jim Dine, Allen Jones, Gerald Laing, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Phillips, Mel Ramos, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, and John Wesley.

Beginning in the 1960s, Wesselmann reinvented the still life by incorporating the trappings of modern life, such as electrical appliances, with traditional still life subject matter like fruit. This was his "pop" take on a classical genre. In this print, Wesselmann places a television set and a large yellow pear next to each other on a shelf. A blue and white gridded background, reminiscent of 1950s era wallpaper, lends a nostalgic quality to the composition.
