Known for his Pop Art figural compositions, as well as his collages and still lifes, Cincinnati-born Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and at the Cooper Union in New York from which he graduated in 1959. Wesselmann had a profound respect for the Abstract Expressionists, but he went in the opposite direction stylistically with his own work, becoming a founding member of the American Pop Art movement. He was influenced by Henri Matisse's achievements in terms of color, form and composition as well. The unique style that characterizes Wesselman's work was developed through his return to the fundamentals of classical art-historical subject matter and mixing them with the new Pop Art aesthetic.
