Lot Details

Done for the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts fundraiser in New York City, in the year 2000. The fundraiser was help promote events held at the center year round.

Known for his Pop-Art “the Great American Nude Series,” figures, as well as collages and still-life, Cincinnati-born Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and in the late 1950s at the Cooper Union in New York—where he graduated in 1959. Wesselmann had a profound respect for the Abstract Expressionists, however, he instead became a founding member of the American Pop Art movement. He was influenced by Henrí Matisse's achievements in terms of color, form and composition as well; the unique style that characterizes his work was developed by returning to the fundamentals of classical art-historical subject matter and mixing them with the new Pop Art aesthetic.
