This oil on canvas work exemplifies the artist's propaganda-inspired style. Pervaded by an eye-catching red, "F.O.A.M." displays the artist's characteristic use of graphic lines to create a scene that borders on the surreal and challenges the viewer to tease out the narrative.

Contemporary German painter Tilo Baumgärtel (b. 1972) is known for his large-scale figurative oil paintings inspired by works of social realism and by propaganda posters. Often classed as a member of the New Leipzig School of painting, Baumgärtel makes dramatic use of shadow and line to depict surreal and fantastical scenarios. Baumgärtel trained as a machine technician before attending the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. He has exhibited at venues including the Seongnam Art Center, Seoul, South Korea (2012); Biksady Gallery, Budapest, Hungary (2011); Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig, Germany (2010); Galerie Safn, Reykjavik, Iceland (2006); Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, MA (2005); and Cleveland Museum of Art (2005). He lives and works in Leipzig, Germany.
