Lot Details

"Salvation no. 12" (2007) is one of the most beautiful and sublime of the intense series of large-scale color photography by famed Chinese Contemporary photographer Tian Taiquan. This work belongs to Tian's iconic "Sacrifice" series where performance art and photography intersect. The setting here is a famous graveyard in China, a dark and mysterious locale, linked to the days of The Cultural Revolution. As if an angel descending, a luminous anonymous nude young woman appears amidst the darkness of the graveyard, her diaphanous lavender robes billow around her, filled with life and color. Almost going unnoticed at the far left of this surreal narrative is a transparent spectral image of a young school girl, sitting quiet and small upon the graveyard steps, as if she has been waiting for years for this angel come and take her to a better place. The spirit of this young girl represents the souls of all the innocent people lost during the Cultural Revolution. This photograph is unframed and in excellent condition from an edition of just 8.
