Lot Details

"Sacrifice No. 27" (2007) is considered one of the most beautiful and intense of the large-scale color figurative photographs by famed Chinese Contemporary artist Tian Taiquan (China B. 1960), from his epic "Sacrifice" series, where performance art, film and photography intersect. This photograph is from an edition of 8, measures 47.25 x 88.6 inches (120 x 225 cm), is unframed and in excellent condition. The setting is a mysterious locale where a nude woman sits in the dark, her face and head obscured from view, possessing the feel of a Classical marble torso. Her porcelain skin glows as she is lit dramatically from an unknown light source, revealing that her virginal skin has been "tattooed" with Chinese text in black ink, her body replacing a sheet of paper from a Communist Chinese manifesto. Bright red blood drips from one breast, the color symbolizing China matching the PRC red badge she wears on one arm.

His work is the inspiration for countless emerging and young Chinese figural photographers.
