Lot Details

"Sacrifice《祭》No. 27" (2008) is considered one of the most beautiful and intense of the large-scale color figurative photographs by famed Chinese Contemporary artist Tian Taiquan (China B. 1960), from his epic "Sacrifice" series, where performance art, film and photography intersect. The setting is a famous Beijing cemetery at night, where a nude woman sits in the dark, her face and head obscured from view, possessing the feel of a Classical marble torso. She glows, lit dramatically from an ethereal, unknown light source, revealing that her nude body has been completely "tattooed" with Chinese text, her porcelain skin replacing a sheet of paper from a Communist Chinese manifesto or writings from Mao's "Little Red Book". Bright red blood drips from one breast, the color symbolizing China, matching the Red Guard" PRC uniform arm badge she wears on one arm. This photograph is from an edition of 8, measures 47.25 x 88.6 inches (120 x 225 cm), is unframed and in excellent condition.

A pioneer of the 'Cynical Realist' movement of artists from his generation, Tian Taiquan (China,b. 1960) uses his work to critique the internal politics and agenda that defined the Mao-era and events such as the "Cultural Revolution" which he experienced as a young man. The artist graduated from the prestigious Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China in 1988 and was a Resident Artist at Tank Loft, Chongqing Contemporary Art Centre, China. Tian Taiquan continues to be one of the most relevant photographers from the Chinese Avant-Garde generation of artist. His photographs, especially from the "Sacrifice" series, have been the subject of Gallery and Museum exhibitions such as "Seek and Hide, Tian Taiquan Solo Exhibition," Cultural Arts Museum, Beijing, China and "Foreordination and Transcendence" Contemporary Photography Exhibition, Singapore.
