Lot Details

"Memory of Time No. 6" (2007) is one of the most sought after images from Chinese Contemporary photographer Tian Taiquan's (Chinese B. 1960)
iconic series of large format color photographs where performance art and photography intersect and is from a small edition of just 6. This work is mounted on alubond and is unframed and in excellent condition. Here two young Chinese women whose identities remains anonymous with their faces hidden, lay together at the lower portion of a newspaper-laden scene, the photo literally wall-papered with Chinese Communist papers. Each woman appears bleeding or injured from artificial wounds in this staged composition, their blood a metaphor for the blood of all Chinese individuals who lived and died during the Cultural revolution. Both women wear iconic green and red PRC military badges, hats and uniforms that barely attempt to cover their nudity. The uncertainly of the physical state of these women, (are they sleeping, wounded, dead?), as well as their unknown emotional and psychological state heightens the emotional and psychological tension in a manner that has become a signature of the artist.

Tian Taiquan (b. 1960, China) has been one of the leading performance artists and photographers of his generation and continues to be one of the most famed and collected photographers from the Chinese Avant-Garde generation of artist. His work is the inspiration for countless emerging and young Chinese figural photographers. His photographs, especially from the "Memory of Time" series, have been the subject of prestigious Museum exhibitions internationally such as "Seek and Hide, Tian Taiquan Solo Exhibition," Cultural Arts Museum, Beijing, China and "Foreordination and Transcendence" Contemporary Photography Exhibition, Singapore. His work is found in the world's top fine art and photo Museum and Private collections. The artist graduated from the prestigious Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China and has been a Resident Artist at Tank Loft, Chongqing Contemporary Art Centre.
