Lot Details

Note: This lot is for 2 photographs: "Memory of Time No. 1" and "Memory of Time No. 2" (2007). Both are unframed, from edition of 6, in excellent condition and measure 88.19 x 47.24 inches (224 x 120 cm) each.

"Memory of Time, No. 1 & No. 2" (diptych) (2007) together create one of the most visually arresting and highly sought after works by famed Chinese Contemporary photographer Tian Taiquan (Chinese B. 1960). This work belongs to his iconic "Memory of Time" series of large vertically-formated color c-print photographs where performance art and photography intersect. Tian composes these as if each is a traditional Chinese scroll that instead of being covered in hand-written calligraphy, is filled with Communist Chinese newspapers, manifestos and letters. Atop these printed materials, Tian poses two young Chinese women, wearing iconic green and red PRC military uniforms, red arm bands and military caps, that barely attempt to cover their nudity and whose identities remains anonymous. Tian's women are depicted bleeding from wounds in staged compositions, a powerful metaphor for the blood of all Chinese individuals who suffered and died during the Cultural Revolution. The uncertainly of the physical state of these women, (are they sleeping, wounded, dead?), as well as their unknown emotional and psychological state heightens the emotional and psychological tension in a manner that has become a signature of the artist.

Tian Taiquan (China, b. 1960) has been one of the leading performance artists and photographers of his generation and continues to be one of the most famed and collected photographers from the Chinese Avant-Garde generation of artist. His work is the inspiration for countless emerging and young Chinese figural photographers. His photographs, especially from the "Memory of Time" series, have been the subject of prestigious Museum exhibitions internationally such as "Seek and Hide, Tian Taiquan Solo Exhibition," Cultural Arts Museum, Beijing, China and "Foreordination and Transcendence" Contemporary Photography Exhibition, Singapore. His work is found in the world's top fine art and photo Museum and Private collections. The artist graduated from the prestigious Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China and has been a Resident Artist at Tank Loft, Chongqing Contemporary Art Centre.
