Thomas Ruff (b. 1958, Germany) is an internationally renowned photographer who lives and works in Düsseldorf. Ruff studied photography from 1977 to 1985 with Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He names Walker Evans, Eugene Atget, Karl Bloßfeld, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston as his main influences. During his studies, Ruff developed a method of conceptual, serial photography. His focus was on interiors of living quarters, with features typical of the 1950s to 1970s. Ruff is renowned for his unmediated shots of commonplace interiors, his evocative nudes borrowed from pornographic websites and his jpeg series. In 2007 Ruff was the subject of two major solo exhibitions at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, and the Sprengel Museum in Hannover.
