Lot Details

Ma Te (Born in Germany to Chinese parents, 1980). This work is unframed and in excellent condition.

This stunning color photograph belongs to the artist's "Forbidden Tradition in China" Series of photographs that document two events that have been highly influential on Ma Te; Chinese Opera and the use of men to play the roles of women (as seen here) and the first "Mr. Gay Olympics" Contest held in China in 2010. Thus these photographs mix the deceptive beauty of the Opera with male body-building poses. The artist titled this series based upon the taboo against homosexuality in China in contrast to the cultural acceptance to watch men depict women in full female dress and makeup for the Opera.
