Considered the Warhol of Japan, Takashi Murakami (b. 1962, Tokyo) is a prolific Contemporary Japanese artist who works in traditional media such as painting, as well as in digital and commercial media. Classically trained in historic ‘Nihon-ga’ style at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (BFA, MFA, and Ph.D), Murakami blends traditional Japanese styles with contemporary pop culture, exploring the boundaries between high and low, conceptual and commercial, and East and West, especially with his trademark usage of anime and manga cartoon figures. He coined the term “Superflat”, a post-modern style describing both the aesthetic and conceptual characteristics of the Japanese today which lacks substantial depth, and also actively participates in the art world as a curator and a critical observer. Among his extensive exhibitions, some notable examples include a major retrospective which toured from the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art to the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt, Germany and the Guggenheim in Bilbao (2008-09), and solo shows at the Gagosian Gallery in London (2011) and the Palace of Versailles in France (2010).
