Lot Details

This untitled watercolor by Susan Shatter is an exquisite example of the artist’s bold technique and vivid range of colors. Depicting an eclectic scene of foliage, the artist careful captures the twisting entangled leaves of the hosta plant, wreathed by various other flora. In addition to her knowledge of plants, Shatter exemplifies an incredible understanding of light and shadow, dappling her composition with a brilliant display of sunlight.

Renowned for her work as a watercolorist, Susan Shatter (1943-2011) has executed a substantial body of work throughout her career. Employing a sumptuous array of colors to saturate her compositions, Shatter’s watercolors evoked a sense of nature’s ephemeral beauty and brought a contemporary sensibility to the landscapes she painted. Traveling not only across the United States but throughout the world, the artist was a major proponent of the medium, expressing profound emotions to match the imagery and mood of her work. Shatter was the National Academy President from 2005-2009 and had exhibited at such venues as the National Academy of Design (New York, NY), The Museum of Modern Art (Shiba, Japan), and the Denver Museum of Natural History (Denver, CO), among others.
