Lot Details

This archival inkjet print on archival paper by Sunil Gupta entitled “Love and Light 3, Mandolin, GDA,” stands testament to Gupta’s highly personal bravado. In its entirety, Gupta symbolically juxtaposes an intimate self-portrait with the ceremonious coastal landscape of his Indian ancestral hearth. By contrasting these two types of images, Gupta personifies the innate and unbreakable bond with the land.

This work comes framed and measures 28.75 x 67 inches (73 x 170 cm).

One of the most famous post-Modern Indian artists working today, Sunil Gupta was born in New Delhi, India in 1953. He moved to Montreal when he was a teenager and lived in New York in the mid-1970s. There he studied photography with Philippe Halsman and Lisette Model at the New School for Social Research. In 1983, he received his MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art in London. Gupta’s photographic work is heavily influenced by his own personal history. He explores political and social issues of India, often focusing on themes of race, gender and sexuality. Gupta’s photographs have been shown in over 90 solo and group exhibitions worldwide, more recently including Alliance Francaise Gallery, New Delhi, India (2012); Vadehra Art Gallery, Delhi, India (2009); Bombay Art Gallery, Mumbai, India (2007). He also has two published monographs: “Pictures From Here” (2003) and “Wish You Were Here: Memories of a Gay Life” (2008).
