Lot Details

This stunning large-scale color photograph belongs to the rare and exciting, newly released series of surreal, figurative photographs by famed 'emerging' multi-media Indian artist, Sumedh Rajendran (India, b. 1972) who is already globally acclaimed for his sculptures and mixed-media installations. This photograph is edition 3 of 4 and measures 48 x 60inches, is unframed and in perfect condition.
This is a very important opportunity to acquire a photographic work by Rajendran that have been internationally acclaimed as a major new body of work by the artist. Two men are depicted from the posterior, stand straight next to one another against blue skies in a desert environment. We soon realize that the nature and arrangement of this scene is impossible, as one man stands upright, the other upside down, both with plastic petrol containers stacked atop their heads, literally rendering them immobile and anonymous. They hold even more containers as others surround them and fill the scene. The commentary on our reliance on oil and gas is undeniable, and also poetically explored the repression of society and our reliance on consumerist products in order to literally survive.
These 'pastiche' type of photographic images create vast cinemascopic narratives that are the vehicle for Rajendran to explore ideas that help him deepen his commitment to an understanding of the irrational nature of hypocrisy. Rajendran often places the notion of consumption against, and as part of, an array of architectural references of the Indian city or empty skylines, coupled with individuals as they stand, lurch, jump, fall, droop, that suggest a continuous instability in the postmodern world that we are building-wherein individuals cannot stand upright or face the pressure of progress the petty bourgeoisie suggestively dictates.

The artist was born in 1972 and completed his BFA from College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum in 1994 and MFA from Delhi College Of Art in 1999. The artist is represented by the elite Vadehra Art Gallery, London and India. Select recent solo and group shows include:
