Lot Details

During the 1990s, Sue Williams began to transition her focus from the political commentary presented in her early work towards the more abstracted compositions of recent years. In 'Rinoplasty Re-growth', Williams depicts the outline of a crouching nude woman. Concentrating on an intimate moment, Williams infuses the organic curves of the female form with her distinctive cartoonish exaggerations to bring an element of abstraction and a distance from reality to her female representation. Mysterious yet recognizable, Williams' figure provides a unique perspective of female sexuality and its social implications.

The work is framed and in excellent condition. There is minor paint chipping along the edges of the frame (see images).

Sue Williams (B. 1954, Chicago Heights, IL) is a contemporary American artist who in the 1980s, took the art world by storm with gutsy paintings of cartoonish figures acting out scenes of rape and abuse. Williams was considered one of the most influential female artists of the time along with Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman and Jenny Holzer and she was included in 3 consecutive Whitney Biennials. Over time these graphic figurative works evolved into disengaged body parts, sexually elusive abstractions, and comical criticisms on warfare. She has exhibited at venues the world over including a 2010 solo show “Al-Qaida is the CIA” (303 Gallery, New York, NY), a 2008 solo show “Sue Williams: Small-Talk, High Heels, Ormeau Baths” (Gallery OBG, Belfast, Northern Ireland), and a 2007 group show “Comic Abstraction: Image Breaking, Image Making” (Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY), among numerous others.
