Lot Details

"Sex and The City No. 3" (2010) is a stunning example of the unabashedly modern portraits of young Chinese women who are part of the hip, educated, and adventurous generation of today's Chinese young women, by Contemporary Chinese artist Su Zihan. This portrait is of a beautiful, young Chinese woman, depicted from a bird's-eye perspective, gazing curiously outwards, with her beautiful face framed by hair dyed an electric blue. Her visage combined with this dizzying perspective both feel other-worldly, as if a vision from a memory or dream. The artist's incredible skill as a painter and the sophisticated use of color, perspective, light, and shadows further heighten the dynamism and freshness of this portrait--a metaphor for the changing face of the urban youth of today's China.

This painting is part of the artist's famous realist, polychrome series of oil paintings entitled the "Sex and the City", which depicts the adventurous spirit and sense of rebellion, sexual freedom and desire for independence that the women of China's major cities are expressing, depicted in provocative poses yet never depicting explicit nudity. Su's "Sex and the City" paintings speak to the more accepting attitude in modern-day China for the younger female generation to break cultural taboos and explore the pursuit of emotional and sexual pleasure, such as intoxication and smoking. There is often an underlying tone of intrigue and rebellion, as seen here, adding a further dimensionality to his work.

Su Zihan is one of the leading young Chinese painters of his 1980's generation, with numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries internationally. In his native China, he is renowned for his incredible skill as a painter and for his fresh take on his subject matter. The most recent Museum and Gallery exhibition venues for the artist include the Shangshang Art Museum (Beijing, China), the Royal Castle Museum (Tours, France), and VIP’s International Gallery amongst others. The artist lives and works in China.
