Lot Details

'Secret Space No. 20" (2011) is one of the largest, most sophisticated and undeniably erotic photo-realist oil paintings by famed, Chinese Contemporary artist Su Zihan (B. China, 1978). This intimate, super-cropped portrait is of a stunning young Chinese woman, who rests her chin in the palm of her hand, as she casually smokes a cigarette that manages to be both docile and sensual. The young woman mostly hidden in the shadows seems completely comfortable to be gazed upon, and to gaze back, with her face mostly hidden in the shadows with an artificial light source illuminating select portions of her face and hands. This element of reveal/conceal is an iconic feature of the very best of Su's paintings, enhancing the voyeuristic feeling as well as enhancing ones longing and curiosity.

"Secret Space No. 20" belongs to the artist's famed 'Private Space' series of realist oil portraits of beautiful young Chinese women engaged in pleasurable activities, whether it is smoking, drinking or more sexual pursuits. This Series examines the more accepting attitude within his generation in modern-day China towards women breaking cultural taboos and the increasingly acceptable practice of their pursuit of physical and mental pleasure. Su Zihan is known for a style that is undeniably erotic without resorting to graphic nudity to express sexual desire, relying instead on non-verbal cues, usually the faces and hands of his subjects, to convey longing and desire.

Su Zihan was born in 1978 in China and received his formal training with a BFA from Fine Arts Department of Chuuzhou College, Anhui Province, China in 2001 and in 2003 he studied at The Fine Arts Academy, Oil Department of Anhui Normal University, Anhui Province, China. Su has already been exhibited and collected internationally at numerous Museums and Fine Art Galleries internationally including at The Shangshang Art Museum (Beijing, China), the Royal Castle Museum (Tours, France), and VIP’s International Gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands), among numerous others. The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
