Lot Details

"Private Space No. 5" (2010) is one of Su Zhihan’s most subtly yet undeniably sexually charged paintings by the artist to date. With an intense focus on the red parted lips and delicate teeth that gently bite down on a string of amethyst beads clenched in her fist, the artist conveys the young woman's undeniable longing. This work speaks to the more accepting attitude in modern-day China of breaking cultural taboos is a common theme of the 80's generation of artists, who are also exploring the increasingly acceptable practice of pursuing physical and mental pleasure, specifically the pursuit of sexual desires. This painting measures 59 x 31.50 inches unframed and is in excellent condition.

Su Zhihan is one of the leading young Chinese painters since the 1980's generation, with numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries internationally. His style is subtle yet undeniably erotic, as exemplified in his series of realist portrait paintings of young women from his generation. The "Private Space" series explores the non-verbal cues of these subversive desires in close-up, cropped compositions of sexually charged or intoxicating women. As seen here, the artist often focuses on facial features to intensify the conveyance of longing and desire. There is often an underlying tone of danger and intrigue, adding a further dimensionality to his work. Exhibition venues for the artist include the Shangshang Art Museum (Beijing, China), the Royal Castle Museum (Tours, France), and VIP’s International Gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands), among numerous others.
