Lot Details

This stunning oil painting "Girl (Private Space Series No. 26)" is one of the most quietly erotic photo-realist images by rising Chinese Contemporary star, Su Zihan. His use of light and shadow, to play with layered ideas both reveal/conceal, physically and psychologically, and are at play here to depict a beautiful young Chinese woman, who gazes out as if just awaken from sleep. She is half-hidden amongst shadows, with only fragments of her face and hand exposed, luminous in full light. Her porcelain skin, delicate fingers, and full lips become the focal point of the work. The grey tones used by Zihan, with but a touch of color seeping in the wood, intentionally imitate a vintage photograph, removing the subject one step further from the viewer. These subtle touches charge the painting with an aloof yet undeniable level of eroticism and voyeurism. This work measures 43.3 x 59 inches and is in excellent condition.

Su Zihan's paintings speaks to the more accepting attitude in modern-day China of breaking cultural taboos, and is a common theme of the 80's generation of artists, who are also exploring the increasingly acceptable practice of pursuing physical and mental pleasure, specifically the pursuit of sexual desires in China. The "Private Space" series explores the non-verbal cues of these subversive desires of the young, beautiful and intoxicating Chinese women of his generation. His use of non-verbal cues from the women he paints, based mostly on their facial features, is a highly effective manner with which to convey their curiosity, secret longings, and desires.

Su Zihan has been the subject of numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries internationally. Exhibition venues for the artist include the Shangshang Art Museum (Beijing, China), the Royal Castle Museum (Tours, France), and VIP’s International Gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands), among numerous others. The artist lives and works in China.
