Lot Details

"Enjoying" (2007) is an important example of the photorealist oil paintings by Chinese artist Su Zihan that have gained him an international position as one of the leading young artists of the so-called "80's Generation" of Chinese Contemporary Realist painters. This super-cropped portrait of a stunning young Chinese woman, depicted nude and with heavy-lidded eyes, is captured in a dream-like, moment of secret pleasure, right as she is about to take a sip of liqueur from a glass. Su steers the visual focus toward her mouth which is painted a glossy, sensual red, similar in color to the ruby liqueur, leaving the rest of the portrait painted in a dream-like haze of tones based on the grey-scale of a black and white photograph.

In his native China, he is renowned for his incredible skill as a painter and for his subject matter and for a style that is subtle yet undeniably erotic. Su tends to focuses on facial features to intensify the conveyance of longing and desire in his women and there is often an underlying tone of the subversive and of intrigue, adding further dimensionality to the his work.

Su Zihan is one of the leading young Chinese painters since the 1980's generation, with numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries internationally. Exhibition venues for the artist include the Shangshang Art Museum (Beijing, China), the Royal Castle Museum (Tours, France), and VIP International Gallery (Amsterdam, Netherlands), among numerous others. The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
