Combining acrylic and enamel, Steven Charles demonstrates his unique style that blurs the line between abstraction and narration in this 2008 painting, ‘Kimster’. For Charles, the choice and application of material are what decipher his compositions. Layering color and texture, the abstract pattern Charles creates tells a story about and the materials’ journey and transformation throughout the painting process.

Using material as his compositional inspiration, Steven Charles (b.1967) creates unique paintings and sculptures by focusing on the interplay between his traditional and non-traditional materials and technique. Often incorporating three-dimensional elements, Charles layers around elemental focal points, producing complex webs of line and pattern that are both abstract and narrative. Born in England, Charles moved to the United States to attend the Universtiy of North Texas in Denton, TX, where he earned his BFA in 1994. In 1996 he received his MFA from Temple University in Rome, Italy. In 2000, Charles was awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and a New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowship, New York, NY. Represented by Marlborough Gallery in New York, NY, Charles has held two solo exhibitions there (2007, 2009). His work has also been the subject of solo shows at Pierogi 2000, Brooklyn, NY (2000, 2001, 2003).

The seven pieces seen here are from a memorial exhibition for Kim Wauson, 1954-2008, artist’s champion, collector, colleague and friend. Fundamental Abstraction II, in Kim’s honor, was exhibited at Haines Gallery, San Francisco, in May of 2008. All works had been donated by the artists in support of a grant, known as The Wauson, which awards $5000 to emerging, or mid-career artists vetted by a jury of their peers. Previous jurors have included James Sienna, David Ebony, Pearl Albino and Jane Scott. To date four awards were presented in late 2009. The Wauson is administered by For-Site Foundation, a not-for-profit artist in residency program based in Nevada City, Ca. 100% of the net proceeds from this sale will fund four additional grants. We thought collectors would enjoy knowing their purchases will be used for a good cause. For more information, visit www.for-site.org
