Steve McCurry has made it his mission to bring the world to our doorstep, and through his portraits we feel we are a part of a global village. In this lot, McCurry brings into focus a child of the nomadic tradition in Tibet. Nomads evoke a romantic sense of freedom, but their numbers are dwindling due to governmental policy, economic pressures, modern technology and urban sprawl. The Tibetan Nomads are yak herders and say their way of life is much easier than that of framers (the animals reproduce themselves and give milk and meat without much work for the tribe), and the woman of the tribe create beaded necklaces and traditional clothing like the ones this enchanting boy is wearing to sell at market. McCurry’s 'Amdo, Eastern Tibet,' 2001 is a portrait of a boy in the Amdo Provence, traditionally the area where the Dali Lama was born.
