Lot Details

In this 2011 work, British painter Stella Vine returns once again to the subject which made her infamous in the art world: Diana, Princess of Wales. Rendered in candy colors, the image of a smiling Princess Diana is juxtaposed with handwritten text that reads, "I will always love you"-- a sentiment that wavers between the sincere and the ironic, as in other celebrity portraits by this provocative artist.

Stella Vine (b. Melissa Jane Robson, 1969) is a contemporary English artist best known for painting celebrity portraits whose bright, kitsch aesthetic is countered by her use of ironic text, captions, and titles. Vine paints in a self-consciously naïve style, and her most frequent subjects are female celebrities with vulnerable personas or tragic histories; spoilt makeup, grotesque details, and running blood often mar these otherwise saccharine portrayals. A former actress and strip artist, Vine came to prominence in 2004, when her provocative painting of Princess Diana entitled “Hi Paul can you come over, I’m really frightened” was featured in Charles’ Saatchi’s “New Blood” exhibition at County Hall, London, England.
