Lot Details

Characterizing the bright neon colors and doodling line work so often seen in his works, this ink and paint on paper entitled ‘Frapp’ by Spencer Sweeney depicts an outburst of cartoonish imagery and graffiti-like tags throughout the composition. Like a chaotic display of visual overload, this work constantly vies for the eye’s attention, combining text, color, and cartoon motifs together in a piece that exemplifies Sweeney’s artistic style as well as a personal touch with "This is Spencer from Sweeney/212-353-9079 is home/How are you?/Frapp!/My address is 168 E. 7th, NYC NY 10009/Apt K”, written throughout.

Known for his explosive use of color, cartoonish drawings, and chaotically arranged compositions, contemporary artist Spencer Sweeney (b. 1973) is known to shift from one artistic style to the next in an intentionally unique approach to his work. With a diverse array of unabashedly absurd imagery, Sweeney’s work often resembles the urban scrawls found through New York’s graffiti ridden city. The artist attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Philadelphia, PA), and has since gone on to receive numerous awards including the Lewis S. Ware Memorial Prize for Experimental Work and the Cuff/Sammack Prize for abstract painting. Sweeney has exhibited at numerous venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY), Crisp Gallery (London, UK), White Columns (New York, NY), and Twig Gallery (Brussels, Belgium), among others.
