Lot Details

"Girl No. 48: Red Army Girl Series" (2008) is a stunning and visually arresting oil painting on canvas, painted in a singular manner that embraces both realism and abstraction in a single portrait, by Chinese Contemporary female artist Song Ying. This work measures 39.4 x 31.5 in. / 100 x 80 cm, is unframed and in excellent condition. Song Ying's portraits in her "Red Army Girl Series" are also unique amongst her contemporaries. She does not critique China's political past, instead she treats it as a nostalgic part of being Chinese. Song's paintings reveal her idolization of days past, as her childhood desire was to happily wear the Red Army uniform. The youthful, smiling, beautiful women whom define her oeuvre are all fractured portraits, with only partial visual information given to the viewer, underscoring that the artist is recalling these images from dreams or fading memories.

The artist graduated from Department of Environmental Art Design in Central Academy of Arts and Design, Beijing, China in 1996. Notable Museum and Gallery exhibitions: 2012: "Tous Mes Vouex!" Red Gate Gallery, Beijing, China
2008: "The Chinese Girl", Michael Schultz Gallery Seoul, Korea (solo); /"New Chinese Positions", S.E. Gallery, Bergen, Norway;/ "Upside Beijing", Por Amor a Arte, Oporto, Portugal;/ “Chinese Contemporary”, Kunsthalle Dresden, Germany.
