Lot Details

Slawomir Elsner is a Polish artist living in Germany. He uses drawings, paintings and photographs to meticulously trace the aesthetic conventions employed by other people to emphasize their identity. Elsner is concerned with forms, conventions and styles taken out of control of officials, born spontaneously and unwittingly “among the people.” Also present is the drive towards anesthetizing of both one’s own environment as well as “the world” as represented by the media.

His paintings and drawings are often based on his own photographs, and presented in series format. Elsner’s work has been exhibited widely throughout Europe, including a popular exhibit called Seven Rooms in Grandfather’s House in 2000 based on photographs inspired by illustrations of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. Elsner’s selected solo exhibitions include the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; Rüdiger Schöttle Galerie, Munich; Marc Jancou Contemporary, New York; Polish Institute, Berlin; and Museum Dhondt-Daenens, Deurle. Elsner lives and works in Berlin. His work is included in the Rubell Family Collection, Miami.
