Lot Details

“In a Lonely Place”, by Slater Bradley (American, b. 1975) demonstrates the artist’s acute interest in themes of melancholic sentimentality and death. Referencing both the Joy Division album cover "Sordide Sentimental" and the romanticist imagery of Caspar David Friedrich, Bradley replaces the album image's cloudy sky with the image of a black hole, inspired by Stephen Hawking. By recreating the sky as a mysterious void, Bradley poetically isolates the viewer, represented by the figure with it's back toward us, rendering them vulnerable and exposed to both nature and the unknown.

This work was included in the artist’s 2009 solo show “if we were immortal” at Team Gallery, NY.
