Lot Details

"Skinny Lady VI" (2008) is a painted cast bronze sculpture of a beautiful, Chinese woman who poses seductively as she wears a skin tight mini-dress and high heels, in the same matching pink color, in visual contrast to her long, dark hair that cascades over one shoulder pinned back with a colorful barrette. This work is by famed multi-media Chinese Contemporary artist Shi Wei, whose subject matter revolves around the female form, with the image of the “beautiful skinny woman” now his trademark. This work measures 41 x 17.27 x 11.81 inches, is edition 2 of 10 and is in excellent condition. Each of Shi's women has their own characteristics, as the artist strives to give them each their own identity. The balance of seduction and Neo-Pop kitsch in his figures allows the artist to critique the pressure placed on young women born in the 1980's an 1990's in China to be physically 'perfect'.

Shi Wei (China, B. 1965) achieved both his B.A. in 1986 and M.A. in 1997 at Hebei Academy of Fine Arts and currently teaches at the Beijing City University. He has exhibited for years throughout Asia, including the International Contemporary Art Fair in Hong Kong, the Singapore Art Fair, The Art Center of BIAC, Beijing, History Museum of China, Beijing and Yang gallery, Singapore and Beijing.
