Lot Details

"Beauty No. 1" (2008) is a painted cast bronze sculpture of a beautiful, Chinese woman who poses seductively as she kneels on the ground running her hand through her hair and wearing provocative lingerie, thigh-high stockings and high heels, all in the same matching bright-pink color. This work is by multi-media Chinese Contemporary artist Shi Wei, whose subject matter revolves around the female form, with the image of the “beautiful skinny woman” now his trademark. Each woman has her own characteristics, as the artist strives to give them each their own identity. Some gaze out with nonchalance, while others are overtly seductive, with engaging “come hither” looks. The balance of seduction and neo-pop kitsch in his figures allows the artist to critique the pressure placed on young women born in the 1980's an 1990's in China to be physically 'perfect'. This is edition 4 of 10 and is in excellent condition.

Shi Wei achieved both his B.A. in 1986 and M.A. in 1997 at Hebei Academy of Fine Arts and currently teaches at the Beijing City University. He has exhibited for years throughout Asia, including the International Contemporary Art Fair in Hong Kong, the Singapore Art Fair, The Art Center of BIAC, Beijing, History Museum of China, Beijing and Yang gallery, Singapore and Beijing.
