Lot Details

This is an original, extremely rare framed silkscreen painting on wood panel by famous American artist Shepard Fairey, featuring one of his most iconic images: Joey Ramone, Fairey's homage to the great musician, vocalist and songwriter who founded the legendary counter culture group "The Ramones." (1951-2001).

This work is numbered 2/2. There is only one other edition of this rare work in the world, thought to still be in the Artist's collection. (There is a more popular Shepard Fairey print of Joey Ramone -- from an edition of 300, but that is not to be confused with this rare silkscreen painting on board - one of only 2.)

This work is hand signed and dated by Shepard Fairey in pencil on both the front of the piece, as well as the back, and it is hand numbered 2/2 in the recto and verso. It is in the artist's original wood frame. For true fans and serious collectors of Shepard Fairey --but most especially for loyal fans and devotees of counter culture hero Joey Ramone this rare and iconic piece is a must have, and this is a unique opportunity to acquire it.

Shepard Fairey has become a pioneer in the street art environment and given a voice to American graffiti art, encapsulating a new chapter for the movement. Fairey’s art reached a new level of recognition in 2008, when his “HOPE” portrait of Barack Obama became the iconic image of the presidential campaign and helped inspire an unprecedented political movement. As Shepard Fairey’s body of work reached its 20-year mark in 2009, the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston, MA) honored him with a full-scale solo retrospective, which drew a record number of visitors for the museum. Entitled ‘Supply and Demand,’ the exhibition shares its name with Fairey’s career-chronicling book, now in its second edition (Gingko Press). The exhibition traveled to the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and then moved to the Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, OH. He recently had a sell-out show at Deitch Projects in New York, the last show to ever be held at this renowned gallery.
