Lot Details

This auction is for 2 screenprints by Shepard Fairey. Up for auction is OBEY Megaphone and OBEY Eye. OBEY Megaphone was produced in a signed and numbered edition of 230 in 2010 and OBEY Eye in a signed and numbered edition of 450 in 2009. Both artworks measure 18 x 24 inches / 46 x 61 cm and are in perfect condition.

After the Obama Progress and Hope images that became synonymous with his super optimistic campaign Shepard Fairey is visible worldwide. He is seen as more of a godfather to the movement than an artist these days, very much like an American version of the UK's Banksy. Shepard Fairey has become the paradigm of American street art - demonstrating a playful yet powerful approach to the world of politics reflecting their flaws and strengths in an publicly accessible street forum. He is one of the most international acknowledged artists living today and an idol for a massive cultural progression.

FROM FAIREY: "I’m producing this Obey Megaphone poster primarily to use in outdoor installations, but I decided to release a smaller signed edition after receiving several requests when the image was first seen in my NYC “May Day” mural. Free speech needs to be celebrated and exercised as a cornerstone of true participation in democracy. I think using your voice goes hand in hand with casting your vote. People with the courage to express a view that was unpopular have encouraged others to speak their minds and turned political tides. Don’t underestimate your power to make a difference."
