Lot Details

"Red Hand" (2006) is one of the most dynamic paintings by famed Chinese Contemporary artist Sheng Qi. This painting measures 35.50 x 31.50 inches (90 x 80 cm), is in excellent condition and acquired in 2007 from the prestigious Red Gate Gallery, Beijing. This painting belongs to his famed "My Left Hand" Series of color paintings and photographs that all share the repeated image of a close-up detail of the artist's left hand.

After the Tiananmen Square uprising, Sheng fled China for Europe, but before leaving he cut off his left pinkie finger which he buried in a flowerpot—so that he might leave part of himself behind in China. His empty palm here is an intense message, balanced by bold Chinese calligraphic script and vivid red paint.
